The Masters and Juniors were first off at Lyndoch this morning as the sun bobbed through the grey mass of cloud regularly.  Near ideal conditions for this time of the year.

Forty Junior two riders lined up for the start at Lyndoch in one of the biggest Junior fields in SA racing this season. In the first of 7 Junior bunches, limit riders Evie Allcroft, Ruby May Mundy and Nikki Boyle led the U17/U15 field away in near perfect racing conditions.  Lachlan Buchanan (12min 30sec) won the lap 1 preme and after one 22km lap of the undulating Lyndoch course, 7 bunches had become 4 with the 12min 30sec bunch catching limit, the 8min and 9 min 30 sec bunches merging and the strong block group catching the 5 minute boys.  The scratch pair of Miles Scotson and Robert-Jon McCarthy were set the tough assignment of giving chopping block 3 minutes and at the end of lap 1 had taken around 20 seconds out of this gap.  Unfortunately McCarthy’s job got even tougher when he lost his scratch partner after 1 lap and had to proceed solo for lap 2.

By Sandy Creek on lap 2, three bunches had become two with the 8 min, 9 min 30, 12 min 30 and limit groups coming together and the block and 5 minute group in pursuit and a few individual riders in between and McCarthy starting to pick up the stragglers.  Around 10km from the finish, block had made it across to the head of the race with a large bunch of 25 riders now together in the home stretch with McCarthy closing solo.  The finish became the biggest junior bunch sprint of the season with no rider able escape with a solo attack on the flat run to the line.  In the run to the finish, position near the front became critical with Justin Gassner and Sam Croft going man-o-man in the last two hundred meters with the G train getting his second victory in a week by a half a wheel over Croft and a fast finishing Joe Higginson third over the line.  Scott Hallandal was fourth over the line with first woman Holly Takos fifth and Ollie Anderson showing some sprint ability to finish sixth.  In all, 21 riders from five different bunches were together at the finish to record the same time with the judges scrambling for the camera and Times-7 to get the placings correct.  McCarthy finished 27^th at 3 min 26 seconds after riding solo for more than half the race which meant Gassner recorded fastest time of 1 h 6 min 52 sec, which was 52 seconds faster than last years race.

IN the U13/U11 and C Grade event over one lap, William Little and Michaela Tamlin held off the scratch riders with Little winning the sprint, Tamlin second and Jason Yuen 3^rd and recording fastest time (42 min 8sec).
